Forum Grading Tips

The Forum activity module allows instructors to set up an area for organized course-related discussions. An instructor can evaluate contributions from students to the forum. Everyone can post discussions, but the instructor is the only one who can add grades to the forum.

Forum Grading

Forum ratings (grades) set up

Forum ratings allow users to evaluate posts in a forum. These are disabled by default but can be enabled within the forum's settings. If ratings are enabled, the forum activity will be added to the gradebook, and scores from the ratings will be included in the student's grades. Only instructors, TAs, and graders in the PolyLearn course can assign ratings to students' forum posts.

  1. Click the Forum activity.
  2. Click the Edit settings link within the Administration block.
    Admin
  3. Within the Ratings section, click the Aggregate type pull down and choose an option other than "No ratings."
    • Average of ratings - The mean of all ratings
    • Count of ratings - The number of rated items becomes the final grade. Note that the total cannot exceed the maximum grade for the activity.
    • Maximum rating - The highest rating becomes the final grade
    • Minimum rating - The smallest rating becomes the final grade
    • Sum of ratings- All ratings are added together. Note that the total cannot exceed the maximum grade for the activity.
  1. Click the Scale pull-down menu and choose an option other than "No grade." This number will be the maximum grade for the forum.
  2. Click either Save and return to course or Save and display.

Note: Only the instructor can submit ratings for Forum posts. These ratings are reflected in the gradebook.
Note: If the No ratings option is chosen, the Forum activity will be ungraded and thus will not appear in the gradebook.
